About Cape Fynbos

THE SCENT OF FYNBOS

There is a scent that belongs to the Cape of South Africa.

It is difficult to describe because it is never quite the same.

Walk a Cape pathway early in the morning and the air can feel cool, green and almost damp. Later, under the warmth of the sun, something more aromatic emerges - herbaceous, resinous, sometimes floral, sometimes almost medicinal. Climb higher and the wind changes it again. Walk towards the dunes and salt air moves through it.

And yet, somehow, you always know it.

Fynbos.

It is the wild vegetation that covers the mountains, valleys and coastal landscapes of the Cape - part of one of the most extraordinary botanical regions on Earth.

The Cape Floral Region is one of the world's six floral kingdoms. It is the smallest, yet extraordinarily rich in plant diversity, with thousands of species and an exceptional number that occur naturally nowhere else on Earth.

But statistics cannot really explain fynbos.

You have to walk through it.

A LANDSCAPE YOU CAN SMELL

For those who know the Cape, fynbos becomes part of the memory of being here.

It is the smell of walking the mountain.

Of dogs running ahead on a sandy path.

Of warm vegetation beneath the midday sun.

Of heading along the pathway to the beach with the sea somewhere beyond the dunes.

Of that extraordinary moment after rain when earth, leaves and air seem to become one.

The fragrance is never singular. Thousands of plants share the landscape, and what surrounds you changes as you move through it.

Fynbos does not reveal itself all at once.

Perhaps that is why it belongs so naturally in AVIXIA perfume.

THE UNKNOWN NOTE

We work with distinctive aromatic materials from the Cape alongside precious botanical oils and extracts from around the world.

We are not trying to make perfume that simply smells like fynbos.

We are capturing something more elusive.

Its movement.

Its contrasts.

Its sense of place.

The way something green becomes warm; something floral gives way to earth; something familiar is interrupted by a note you cannot quite identify.

Our fragrances are designed in much the same way. They open, move and change on the skin. Different facets appear. Others disappear. Hours later, something unexpected may emerge.

And somewhere within them is a trace of the Cape.

Something wild. Something beautiful. Something you may never quite be able to name.

That is fynbos.

And perhaps some things are more beautiful when they remain a little unknowable.
